In the spring of 2015, we were approached by a group of amateur mineralogists regarding a survey of fields where plowed outcrops of mineral-containing veins (cairngorms and amethysts) are evident. They wanted to map the course and extent of thicker veins and possible cavities / drusen where the crystals would be located.
The bedrock here begins at a depth of about 2 m. Above this depth it is weathered with lots of stones mixed with clay soil. The original vein filling is clearly visible at a depth of 0.7-2 m and usually extends downwards into the vein in the compact rock. Upwards, the filling is more broken and the plow coulters already reach up to 40 cm. If this filling was in the cavity, it can be assumed that the crystals had the opportunity to grow into this cavity. At shallow depths, there are fillings with sand, clay or mud in such cavities and they are well recognizable for georadar.
The fillings found were often over 50 cm thick.
60 cm wide amethyst veins from the outcrop.
And this vein with a large cavity at a depth of 15 m is waiting to be uncovered.
